(Greater Sudbury, ON) – The Sudbury Spartans U16 and U18 boys’ teams return for another Saturday of football at James Jerome. The Quinte Skyhawks provide the opposition for both teams, as the U16s take the field at 1:00p.m., with the U18s playing at 4:00p.m. on Saturday, May 31st.
The U16 Spartans enter Saturday after a narrow defeat to Huronia at home, 11-10. Running back Levi Blouin recorded the only touchdown of the game for the Spartans, a 59-yard catch and run. With a 1-1 record, Saturday proves a great test of resiliency for a promising team. The U16 Quinte Skyhawks travel to Sudbury with a 2-0 record and are coming off a 21-0 shutout win against the U16 Toronto Jr. Argos.
The U18 Spartans bounced back from a one-point loss in Week 1 in grand fashion, defeating Huronia 45-20 on home turf. Receiver Quin Mazzuchin had a massive day, recording five receiving touchdowns on the way to a Spartans victory. With a 1-1 record themselves, the U18 Spartans will welcome a U18 Quinte Skyhawks team that is 2-0, most recently defeating the U18 Toronto Jr. Argos, 34-21.
The U16 Spartans girls kicked off a new era of tackle football this past Sunday, as they travelled to Ottawa for a matchup with the U16 Bel-Air Lions. The U16s opened their inaugural season with an offensive explosion. Despite being down 24-0 in the first quarter, the U16s rallied to score 64 points, defeating Bel-Air 64-52. They play on the road again this Saturday, May 31st, facing the U16 Cumberland Panthers at 3:30 p.m., before their first home game in Spartans history on Saturday, June 7th at 5:00 p.m..
The U19 Spartans girls completed Sunday’s new era with a massive win of their own, controlling a matchup with the U19 Bel-Air Lions throughout and winning 42-6. Just like the U16 Spartans girls, they’ll travel this Saturday, May 31st, to take on the U19 Cumberland Panthers at 6:00 p.m., looking to keep up their dominating display. They will be the final game of a quadruple-header at James Jerome on Saturday, June 7th, with a rematch against the U19 Bel-Air Lions at 7:00 p.m..
