The Sudbury Spartans opened up their season at home this past Saturday with a big win over the Oakville Longhorns. It was a hard-fought game, and in the end the Spartans came out on top winning 35-26.

The Spartans got the ball moving quick, with a couple nice passes from the QB #12 Hunter Holub, and some help from the Longhorns defence who went offside a couple times to help put the Spartans in scoring position.  Muscling his way through the defence, #28 Josh Cuomo, put the first points on the board, for the Spartans to take a 7-0 lead with 10:47 left in the first quarter. Thanks to the shutdown defence, the Spartans took the ball back and marched down the field once more to score another, this time with #22 Matt Glass punching through the defence to score. The Oakville offence seemed to struggle once again and could not get very far downfield before having to punt. On the ensuing Spartans drive they would quickly get downfield with a couple nice passes from Holub to #88 Josh Duckett and #18 Matt Furino. Cuomo then finished the drive off with a solid run, to put the Spartans up 21-0 after the 1st quarter

With something to prove, the Longhorns came out firing in the 2nd, with a deep throw from QB #10 Kyle Holloway to #15 Kale Rive, who ran in it for the touchdown. Oakville, without an extra point kicker, had to go for 2-point conversions, with this one coming up short leaving the score at 21-6 for the Spartans not even 30 seconds into the 2nd quarter. Later in the quarter, #24 Marcus Britt intercepted a pass in the Spartan endzone that stopped a promising Longhorns drive. With some great defence by Sudbury, and some missed catches by the Longhorns offence, the score remained at 21-6 at half time.

Picking up almost halfway through the 3rd quarter, the Longhorns put together a good drive, with Holloway rolling out and bootlegging the ball for a good gain. Then, with another throw to Rive, they were inside the Spartans 40-yard line. Again, with another great pass from Holloway the Longhorns scored. The 2-point conversion on this touchdown was not good, there putting the score at 21-12 with 6:42 let in the quarter. With another endzone interception, this time by #2 of the Spartans, Joshua Girolametto, stopped another strong longhorn drive.

In the 4th quarter, the Longhorns forced a turnover on the Spartans 19-yard line. On the next play, the Spartans did the same to Oakville, putting the ball back in the Spartans hands. After trying to run the ball, Sudbury went for a pass that was intercepted by #3 Malcolm Stokx, who ran the ball in for a touchdown. The following 2-point conversion was good, almost tying the game up with the score at 21-20 for the Spartans with 13:24 left in the game. Feeling the pressure, the Spartans would went on to score 2 touchdowns with Cuomo and Glass running one in each. The Longhorns scored one last time late in the quarter, but it was not enough. The final score came out to be 35-26 for the Sudbury Spartans.

With this win, the Spartans are already looking towards their next opponent the North Bay Bulldogs. With their first game cancelled, we have yet to see what the Bulldogs have to bring to the field this year.
