(Greater Sudbury, ON) The Sudbury Spartans are very happy to announce that they will make their return to the field this spring for the first time in more than two years for the 2022 season.

“We are very excited to announce the Sudbury Spartans 70th Anniversary Season is here and that we will be able to return to play in 2022,” said Sudbury Spartans General Manager Gord Goddard. “We are eager to be back playing football this summer as it’s been a long two years away from the field. For the past several months – our coaches, executive members and provincial colleagues have been working tirelessly at preparing for tackle football in 2022. When you play for the Sudbury Spartans – its more than just a summer football program. You get connected to our Spartan family and community. You become one of the thousands of athletes who have worn the Silver and Blue over the past 70 years.  It’s something that will be a part of your life forever,” he added.

“SW Sport and Entertainment is very excited to be able to bring football back to the Greater Sudbury community this season,” said SWSE CEO and Spartans Owner Dario Zulich. “It has been deeply missed by the community over the past two years and we can’t wait to see everyone back out at James Jerome field in a few short months as we celebrate the 70th anniversary.”

The Spartans will field a Junior Varsity team as well as the Men’s team which are both scheduled to begin their season this May at Lily Creek James Jerome Field.

“Kim ‘Junior’ Labrosse will be the head coach once again for our NFC Men’s team. Junior has been at the helm for several seasons and is a NFC Hall of Famer. He continues holds the Spartan Interception Record and sits #2 for Interceptions in league history. As a husband, a father, a teacher and a community leader – Junior understands the game of football and we are excited he is back for his 35th season with the team as either a player or coach,” said Goddard.

“Jordan Desilets will be taking over our Junior Spartans team as Head Coach. Jordan was a huge part of our inaugural season in 2019 and has earned the respect of fellow coaches, players and fans,” added Goddard. “We know our program is in great hands with Jordan and the coaches he has assembled to work with the team”

The JV squad will play for the Ontario Summer Football League (OFSL) this season, while the Men’s team will remain a member of the Northern Football Conference (NFC).
